Yes this is the first time the Kampin’ crew was ship wrecked. Here is what happened:
It is Saturday early evening and we decide that after being drunk all afternoon and now sobering up it would be better to pack up tonight and drive home. This way we would have a day at home, Sunday, to detox prior to going back to work. This was going well and we successfully returned the rental fishing boat and had brought back 85% of the gear on the pontoon. Things were going slower than we hoped, chalk that up to MN time, and it got a little dark. We had to get gas and make one final trip to the island site to get the other guys and the reaming gear…
Even though it was dark Tom was confident that it would not be an issue, we had Mike’s shitty GPS and Tom said “I know this lake the the back of my hand”. We started off and things were fine though the passes between islands seemed ‘new’ we were headed in the correct direction when CRUNCH!! we hit a rock. We backed up and all seemed well as we were now on course to the site. After a few minutes the boat starting leaning to one side and it got worse and worse until we crippled into the bay where our site was located.
Once we came in (about 10 pm) we fought over what to do and we all came up with some lamebrain ideas and tried to execute them. The over all plan was solid, drain the water out of the pontoon and plug the hole with duck tape. Where we fell apart was the fact the we all suck at working together and the fact that there was about 1500 gallons of water in the pontoon and it was not going to move.
Top 3 Worst Ideas:
- Turn the boat around and drag it out of the water.
- Use a leaver. (Thanks Brian)
- Drive the crippled bout out into the bay and come in hot and plow it on shore. (I thought it was gonna sink)
So at about 2am we gave up and we called the ranger and asked him if he would get us so we could get some gear for the night. The ranger said “I am not driving in the lake at night” and gave us a number to call in the morning.
To Be Continued…
